Story

After ten years of applying to the marathon (and being secretly relieved when I didn't get a spot), my luck has finally changed - I'm in! On Sunday 26th April, I will be running the London Marathon for a movement called Wave (We're All Valued Equally), and I'd love your support. So, what is Wave? Wave is a movement for change, working to break down the barriers that can result in people with and without learning disabilities being socially segregated. It’s grass-roots, community led, and for the past 10 years has provided places in Muswell Hill (where I grew up) for people of all abilities to meet and have fun together. The great thing is that it benefits everyone. Anxieties are lessened, attitudes to difference are challenged and people’s behaviour changes when we do things with and not for each other. I know this because I've seen it firsthand. Wave, currently run totally by volunteers, wants other communities to benefit from its WithNotFor ethos and practical experience. The money I raise will go towards employing someone to co-ordinate and promote this work. For more information, do check out their website: wave-for-change.org.uk It's an amazing movement which is very close to my heart, so please donate. And, should you like to support me in person, I'd love to see all your friendly faces on the day! Charlotte x
About charity

WAVE

WAVE stands for We’re All Valued Equally. This drives everything we do. We want to help break down the attitudinal and practical barriers that can result in individuals with and without learning disabilities being socially segregated. This, we believe, will happen through us doing things WITH and not FOR each other. We’re a movement for change and we’re already witnessing real change. The confidence and self-esteem of our members with learning disabilities is increasing as we plan and run activities together. We’re also seeing our members without learning disabilities grow in understanding, appreciation and acceptance of ‘difference’. We are building supportive communities between individuals with and without learning disabilities. Our Groups The Challenge Group - weekly playgroup for children with additional needs, their parents and carers. WAVE Church - Monthly informal and creative gatherings. They include singing with Makaton signing and bible teaching using pictures, games and drama. Wave Cafe - In 2017, WAVE launched the cafe project to put our inclusive ethos in to action in the wider community. Wave Cafe is now an independently registered charity - you can find them on their Kindlink page under 'Wave Cafe'.Charity Registration No. XT33028
