The Tumaini Fund (Scotland)

Thank you for visiting our profile page. 'Tumaini' means 'Hope' in Swahili and The Tumaini Fund seeks to bring hope to orphans and widows in Kagera, NW Tanzania. The Fund was established in 2003 by a Scottish doctor (Susan Wilson MBE) in response to the suffering of AIDS widows and orphans in Kagera. Dr Wilson is now based in Guernsey , where the fund originates, and she leads the charity from there making regular trips to Kagera. Local social workers co-ordinate the care for families which is mainly provided by a team of 200 parish workers based in 5 districts where the fund have offices. Although a Christian charity, support is provided to those of all faiths or none. Currently over 25,000 orphans are supported and each has a dedicated parish worker who visits regularly and assists with both practical support and emotional support. The Tumaini Fund (Scotland) was established as a separate charity in Jan 2014 in order to raise awareness and send specific support from Scotland. We are part of a group of sister charities supporting the team in Kagera who are caring for so many widows and orphans with such limited resources. All the care is provided by local Tanzanians and all funds raised here go directly to Tanzania. Although just 5 years old, The Tumaini Fund (Scotland) have been able to support those in Kagera in the following ways: Helping set up an IPT Psychology programme supporting those most traumatised Contribution towards salaries of parish workers and other staff Building of a vocational school in Karagwe Sinking wells in the Mushasha valley Provision of bicycles, boots & jackets to each parish worker Supporting orphans in primary and secondary school through provision of uniforms and stationary. Building houses & supporting rebuilding after the earthquake Participating in micro-enterprise eg provision dairy goats Support with grain distribution during the drought Provision of 'welcome packs' containing school supplies and mosquito nets The objective of The Tumaini Fund is to support the widows and orphans of the Diocese of Kagera in North-West Tanzania, who have HIV towards independent existence, by improving their standard of living and promoting their health and education. We are grateful for the small part we can play in partnering with The Tumaini Fund, Tanzania, to bring hope to widows and orphans in the area.See other opportunities to help us here.
