The Story

Help Kamwi School and Its Surrounding Villages Fourteen years ago, I first visited Kamwi School in a remote village in Zambia. My friend, Charlotte, and I were the very first volunteers here. We were welcomed by Jane Kaye-Bailey, founder of The Butterfly Tree, and joined her grassroots mission to support the school and surrounding communities. We taught at Kamwi school and volunteered in the village clinic, supporting patients with AIDS, malaria, and maternity needs. At the time, The Butterfly Tree had just built the school, installed toilets, and drilled a borehole — vital infrastructure for a village with so few resources. Since then, The Butterfly Tree has helped transform Kamwi — but the need is still urgent… Why This Matters The school has grown, drawing children from villages up to 12km away. But classrooms are crumbling, boreholes are drying up, and sanitation facilities need work. The curriculum has changed too — making existing textbooks obsolete, and families can’t afford to feed their children, let alone buy new books and pencils. The journey to school is dangerous too. Wild elephants roam the area, and tragically, people have been killed. For these children, elephants aren’t a safari attraction — they’re a life-or-death risk. Hunger is a daily reality. Children walk to school hungry and return home hungry. We want to help change that by supporting the school’s own food garden. Kamwi, its dedicated teachers, and its resilient children mean the world to me. This place holds a special place in my heart and I’m hoping you can help. Who We’re Working With Jane Kaye-Bailey is an incredible woman who founded the Butterfly Tree in 2006 – a UK-based charity and registered NGO in Zambia setup to support orphans and rural communities devastated by HIV/AIDS. The organisation focuses on development in health, education, and poverty relief. Key initiatives include borehole construction for clean water, health and education infrastructure, malaria and HIV prevention, food security, women’s income-generating enterprises, youth sports, and orphan support.
