The Story

This memorial fund has been set up by our family in honour of Gary Vaughan who was a much-loved family member who succumbed to Mesothelioma on the 28th May 2020 shortly after his sixty-fifth birthday and is survived by his beloved wife Mandy, two sisters, five children, two step-children and 19 grandchildren. Gary was born on the Faversham brents 25th April 1955 and as an infant moved to Greenhithe Kent where he grew up and lived for over forty years, also residing in Dartford and finally Swanley along with his wife for seventeen years. He had many friends and was a very respected and historically knowledgeable member of the community. Gary started his working life as a copy clerk for Vogue magazine before entering the police force and leaving very shortly after realizing it was not quite for him. In 1973 to 1979 he worked alongside many other local people on the second Dartford tunnel project initially as an above-ground worker and eventually ended up working underground in various job roles. After a short stint as a self-employed taxi driver, he joined the London Fire Brigade in 1981 and remained within the fire brigade until his retirement in 2010 after a very happy and distinguished career. After four years in retirement, he rejoined the workforce as a school caretaker and loved his job at Stone St Marys School and remained there until December 2019. Gary was a very likeable man and had many hobbies including collecting absolutely anything that interested him. He had a passion for Non-League football and used to follow Ebbsfleet United for nearly 60 years and will be sorely missed as he was a regular face on the terraces of Stonebridge Road and far away grounds whatever the weather. Dad was an absolute gentleman to most who knew him, and he was always great company and will be remembered for his love, support, loyalty, fun and generosity. One of his favourite phrases was ‘’no trouble” and he meant it as nothing was too much trouble for him and was always there to lend his hand and advice. He will always be fondly remembered and we will continue to celebrate his life for the rest of our own and we are all very thankful and privileged to have known him and will continue to love and cherish him forever. The whole Vaughan Family would like thank LASAG with all our hearts for the help and advice you gave to Gary and Mandy, and in particular, we would like to mention Marika as they both really appreciated her assistance, support and caring nature.
