The Story
Derek was born 1934, served in the Royal Navy and RNR. He worked
for the GPO in London, Eli Lilly in Basingstoke and made many friends
working at CAV Medway. Derek married Rose in 1956 who sadly died
before her time in 2007; they had 2 children, 5 Grandchildren and 3
Great-Grandchildren. He enjoyed sea fishing as a member of Herne
Bay Angling Association. He supported Whitstable Sea Cadets and
helped at Joy Lane Infants’.
In 1977 Derek was diagnosed with cancer; resultant radiotherapy
leaving him in permanent stomach pain, yet he became a hospital
volunteer at K&CH for over 20 years. Derek was unable to work
after 42 and endured several major operations; latterly breaking his
leg and fracturing his hip.
In December 2018 he was diagnosed with Mesothelioma but
completely surpassed expectations he would lose the fight after 3
months. Derek was very grateful for the visit made by the LASAG
and the resultant support offered. He used his strength of
character and fun outgoing personality to adopt an incredibly
optimistic and positive attitude.
He died April 17th 2020.
