Story of Hertford Museum Archaeology Storage
Our archaeology collections reflect the heritage of Hertford and 30 other towns and villages in East Hertfordshire. They encompass sites from the Palaeolithic to Post Medieval period and include the important Late Iron Age – Roman settlement at Braughing and Puckeridge as well as the Late Saxon development of the county town of Hertford. Our collection includes over 5000 small finds, over 3000 boxes of archaeology and 400+ excavation archives, stored on over a kilometre of shelving. These collections are used routinely by researchers and universities to discover new information about how people lived here in the past as well as featuring in many of our exhibitions and workshops for schools. Unfortunately we are running out of space and desperately need to install roller racking, wheeled shelving units which compress together without aisles, to maximise our capacity. The total project cost is £18,100.80. Please help us continue to preserve and share our local heritage by donating to this project.
Hertford Museum aims to collect, preserve and interpret evidence of the history of the county town and surrounding parishes in the District of East Hertfordshire for the interest, enjoyment and understanding of the local community and other visitors. Hertford Museum cares for and interprets in excess of 100,000 objects reflecting the rich heritage of Hertford and 30 surrounding villages. Approximately 30,000 people use our services each year. We provide a wide range of workshops and resources for schools. We work with community groups to deliver ongoing workshops, events and activities for a diverse range of people. We provide at least four exciting, temporary exhibitions each year, covering topics of both local and global relevance. We have maintained a free admission policy since our foundation in 1903. Hertford Museum is a registered charity. Our strategic aims can be viewed here: hertfordmuseum.org/Aims of Hertford Museum.pdfSee other opportunities to help us here.
