The Story

FreeREG houses our parish and nonconformist registers of baptisms, marriages and burials. The recording of non-civic registers began in England and Wales in 1538; this is separate and distinct from the civil registration process that began in 1837 (see FreeBMD for those). We are currently developing a new version of FreeREG, which is halfway through its transformation. This is the template for the future development of our refreshed versions of the FreeBMD and FreeCEN websites.

Free UK Genealogy

FreeREG provides free access to transcriptions of British registers of baptisms, marriages and burials. We have over 40 million records already transcribed - can you help us make that 400 million? We're currently developing a new version of FreeREG, which is halfway through its transformation. This is a template for the future development of our other sites. We'd like to set up a 'boot camp' for those approaching or in retirement, training them in Ruby and Refinery, so they can contribute to the development and maintenance of this project. Donations will be used for this, or for other expenses, such as servers. We also need transcribers (see https://www.freereg.org.uk/cms/opportunities-to-volunteer-with-freereg to find out more) and technical volunteers (see https://www.freeukgenealogy.org.uk/about/volunteer/tech-volunteering-opportunities/ to find out more.
