The Story

FreeBMD provides free access to births, marriage and deaths records. This resource is ideal for those beginning their family history research. The recording of births, marriages and deaths was started in 1837 and is one of the most significant resources for genealogical research. The transcribing of the records is carried out by teams of dedicated volunteers and contains index information for the period 1837-1983.

Free UK Genealogy

FreeBMD provides free access to transcriptions of the civil registrations of births, marriages and deaths in England and Wales. We want to expand that to the whole of the UK, and military and consular registrations. We have over 270 million records already transcribed - up to 1983. Can you help us continue towards the present, and expand into other civil registrations of the British Isles? We're currently developing a new version of FreeBMD, which begins its build early in 2019. We'd like to set up a 'boot camp' for those approaching or in retirement, training them in Ruby and Refinery CMS, so they can contribute to the development and maintenance of this project. Donations will be used for this, or for other expenses, such as servers. We also need transcribers (https://www.freebmd.org.uk/Signup.html to find out more) and technical volunteers (see https://www.freeukgenealogy.org.uk/about/volunteer/tech-volunteering-opportunities/ to find out more).
