The Story

Females account for just 15% and 13% of engineering and technology undergraduates. EDT run 2 successful university STEM taster courses and we want to encourage more young women from under-represented socio-economic backgrounds to participate in these programmes. By raising money to provide bursaries for young women from socio-economic groups under-represented in STEM. Whilst Inspire is a girls only course, Headstart courses are for anyone. In recent years Headstart has increased its gender diversity , 48% of the 2018 cohort being young women compared to ~30% in 2011. We partner with major UK STEM universities and employers. The focus of the events is a mixture of STEM university taster workshops, lectures, hands on activities and employer engagements. Designed to increase confidence and show STEM degrees to be exciting and accessible to women. Inspire is a programme of exciting courses for Year 11/S4 girls who love science, technology, engineering and maths and want to learn new skills. From the feedback a we now know what skills the students and their teachers want to develop in order get ahead in the Sixth Form. The courses are held at universities, either on a residential or non-residential basis, and run for 3 days. Headstart provides an opportunity for talented students in Year 12/S5 to spend up to a week at a UK university prior to making their university choices. The students can make well-informed decisions about their future degree subject, university and possible careers. Students participate in talks and hands on STEM university activities We are requesting bursaries to fund up to 10 full cost bursaries to Headstart courses and 20 full bursaries for Inspire courses
