The Story

On the 19th and 20th August Peter will be cycling from Leeds to Derby along the route of the George and Robert Stephenson 1840 North Midland Railway; much of which is still the alignment of the Midland Mainline today. The reason for this is to raise awareness of - and money for - the rescue of what may well be the oldest surviving rural railway station in the world - Wingfield Station in Derbyshire. Peter is a trustee of Derbyshire Historic Buildings Trust (DHBT), the charity who have managed to acquire this building after half a century of dereliction, and is also the Project Lead for the Wingfield Station project; having devoted hours of his own time to the cause. DHBT are now raising £250,000 to match a recent grant from the National Lottery Heritage Fund. Your sponsorship donation will be very welcome to support the DHBT in achieving their ambition to complete the restoration of Wingfield Station, and to bring it back to life as business space. Derbyshire Historic Buildings Trust

Established in 1974, Derbyshire Historic Buildings Trust has been responsible for the rescue of many historic buildings throughout the county. Using their skills, knowledge and expertise, members of the Trust identify neglected and abandoned buildings and then work to bring them back into a new sustainable use. DHBT is a non-profit registered charity that is committed to the heritage of Derbyshire; working with its own in-house professionals to provide help and advice to groups and individuals sharing a passion for historic buildings. DHBT is independent of government and local authorities. It relies entirely on generating its own income through grants, membership fees, commercial activities and donations.
