The Story

We are looking to create a ring of trees around the capital – an M25 for nature linking up areas of other habitat, parkland and food-growing space. To do this we need your help to fund our research and campaign work. Green Belt protects the countryside from urban sprawl, ensures all urban dwellers have countryside spaces near at hand, and encourages urban regeneration. We want it to do even more! This project will actively improve the quality and accessibility of green spaces around the capital while also encouraging people to visit, celebrate and enjoy them - with all the health and wellbeing benefits this is known to bring. Building on research by the Forestry Commission identifying Green Belt as a key opportunity for woodland creation in the capital, we have worked with Greenspace Information for Greater London (GiGL) to map existing woodland in Green Belt and surrounding areas, identify top opportunities for new woodland creation, and to analyse underlying habitat, recorded land uses, and the current whereabouts of broader tree cover. Based on this, the route in the map attached has been identified as the best for the ring of trees around the capital - although this could be tweaked if we come up against barriers on the ground. We now need your help to enable us to engage landowners enroute, helping them see the potential of their land for creating habitat connectivity and contributing to carbon capture and storage. Many landowners want to make their landholdings work harder for climate and nature but need encouragement and support to help them take beneficial action sooner rather than later. Help is available from organisations to assist landowners with tree planting plans. But the options can be bewildering and local authority green space staff and other land managers lack time to be able to make real progress. We want to work with members of the London Urban Forest Partnership to offer a coordinated package of support for London based land managers – enabling more efficient use of their time to unlock progress. Our broader vision is that the proposed ring of trees will be complemented by green radial walking and cycling routes connecting the centre with London’s countryside, and more strategic planting targeting areas of green space deprivation across the capital – so that access to nature can be made more available to all. Could you be part of making this happen?
