Pier's 10k run for peace in Colombia

Ten years ago, while running, I injured my knee. While the damage was minor, I haven't been able to run the same distances as I used to. I began​ to enjoy walking long distances. I walk everywhere in London, back home in Italy and wherever I go. While I have tried to start running again several times, I have not been able to run more than 3-4 km and for limited periods of time. However, recently I have been feeling the urgency to try again with more determination than ever. And it is working! I have set myself progressive running targets and the first one is the Virgin Sport 10k run on 21 July. This is going to be a challenge for me but it will push my confidence and running abilities forward and prepare me for the next objective. This year, I am running for the Colombian Caravana, a London-based charity that supports human rights lawyers and defenders at risk in Colombia. I have been volunteering for the Caravana for several years and I am now its Advocacy Director. Human rights lawyers and defenders in Colombia run personal daily metaphorical marathons to protect the environment, represent vulnerable clients such as social leaders, trade unionists, indigenous communities and displaced individuals, and they represent the pillars upon which peace-building efforts rest in Colombia. The Peace Agreement signed in 2016 between the FARC and the Colombian Government acknowledge human rights defenders' fundamental role for a sustainable transitional justice process. But this important work often comes at great personal cost. Colombia is one of the countries in the world where being a human rights defender is most dangerous. Dozens of them have been killed since the signing of the Agreement and yet they continue relentlessly in their important work. If they can run their personal marathon despite the risks they face, I can certainly run my 10k!
