The Story

The Ninth International Caravana of Jurists 2026 is organised by the Colombian Caravana-UK Group in partnership with Colombian human rights lawyers and defenders. Our theme, "A Decade On: Ten Years of Transition and the Continuing Struggle for Justice in Colombia," highlights our ongoing dedication to addressing current threats to justice and human rights defenders following the 2016 Peace Agreement. About the Caravana: The Caravana is an essential platform for delegates dedicated to understanding and engaging with the human rights landscape in Colombia. For 2026, our focus includes: Transition Ten Years On: Reflecting on a decade of transitional (in)justice. Colombia's Current Landscape: Analysing ongoing issues as the nation strives towards peace, yet continues to grapple with widespread violence affecting rural and marginalised communities, including Indigenous and Afro-Colombian territories. Gender Dynamics: Addressing the crucial role of women in peacebuilding while tackling obstacles such as gender-based violence and entrenched societal norms. Ethnic Dynamics: Recognizing the specific challenges faced by Indigenous and Afro-descendant communities, such as violence, forced recruitment, displacement, and discrimination. Everyday Peace: Local approaches to unarmed civilian protection in the absence of institutional guarantees. Delegation Approach & Objectives - The Ninth Delegation is committed to: Understanding Challenges: Delving into the complex issues faced by human rights lawyers and defenders in Colombia. Highlighting Dynamics: Focusing on the interplay of gender and ethnic dynamics with the ongoing violence. Engaging in Fieldwork: Conducting interviews, dialogues, and collaborations to derive insights and formulate actionable recommendations. Advocating Change: Promoting policy reforms, legislative amendments, and structural changes to foster justice, protect vulnerable populations, and tackle issues like gender-based violence and corporate accountability. Do No Harm: Embody and promoting ethical forms of engagement with local communities, actively mitigating against revictimisation. We invite you to join us in amplifying the voices of those impacted by these challenges, fostering international solidarity, and contributing to a just and enduring peace in Colombia.

Colombian Caravana

Colombian Caravana, a UK based charity, was founded in response to the call for solidarity from Colombian lawyers and human rights defenders, emerging 13 years after the “Without Lawyers, No Justice” campaign. Colombia is among the countries with the highest number of lawyers and human rights defenders killed worldwide. Nearly a decade after the 2016 peace accord ending a 50-year conflict, violence has reemerged in new forms and there have been over 1,500 human rights defenders assassinated. With eight accompaniment and advocacy missions organised to date - the most recent in August 2024 - we now seek support for the 9th International Delegation to Colombia. This delegation will investigate and report on the current situation facing lawyers and human rights defenders across the country at a critical juncture.
