The Story

On Sunday 7th April 2024, I will be taking part in the London Landmarks Half Marathon in aid of the Colombian Caravana. The Colombian Caravana, of which I am a trustee, is a UK-based charity that supports and protects lawyers and human rights defenders in Colombia. The Inter-American Commission on Human Rights has recently expressed deep concern over the persistently high number of murders of human rights defenders in the region, with Colombia registering the highest figures in 2023 and Colombia’s Institute for Peace and Development Studies INDEPAZ reported that 188 human rights advocates were killed in 2023 alone, even though the peace deal was signed in 2016. The Caravana works to promote access to justice and uphold the rule of law in Colombia. We work together with Colombian lawyers and human rights defenders to ensure respect for human rights. If they are compromised by infringement of their right to practice independently in the interests of their clients, then justice itself is also compromised. Whilst not a natural runner, I’m taking on this challenge as I feel privileged that I can practice my profession as a lawyer in the UK without the risk that either myself or my family will be put in danger. Despite the peace process in Colombia, attacks against human rights defenders have increased so our work is needed more than ever. Funds raised will go towards the running of the Caravana, in particular, the completion of the Report from the VIII Delegation. Any donation no matter how small will truly have a massive impact. Without lawyers and legal professionals, there can be no justice, and no one should fear for their safety simply for doing their job.
