The Story
Imagine having to cross a dangerous river every day just to go to school, reach a hospital, or access food. For the four communities in the Huye district in Rwanda, this is their reality. But together, we can change that!
This year Balfour Beatty, Mott MacDonald and Bridges to Prosperity are collaborating to build the Kirutamwogo Trail Bridge, a 100m suspension bridge that will span across the Kirutamwogo River. This bridge will be a lifeline for the 2,655 who are unable to cross the river during the rainy season due to flooding. During this period, children are unable to attend school located on the other side of the river and members of the community are cut off from the health centers and markets.
This June, the team of volunteers will embark on a trip to Rwanda where they will work closely with community members to construct the bridge over two weeks. The bridge will be built using locally sourced and donated materials, providing an environmentally responsible and sustainable solution. At the end of the construction project, local people from the communities will be trained in the inspection and maintenance of the structure, allowing the bridge to support the population for generations to come.
