Al-Fikr
In the early hours of Monday 6th Feb 2023, two enormous 7.8 and 7.5 magnitude earthquakes struck the regions of South East Turkey and North West Syria.
A number of aftershocks, some as strong as 6.5 in magnitude, occurred within minutes after the first earthquake, which struck at 4.17 in the morning while many people were still asleep in their homes. The provinces of Kayseri, Malatya, Adana Diyarbakır, Gaziantep and Hatay are among the 10 areas to have been impacted in the Turkish region. Tremors were felt as far as Cyprus, Egypt and Lebanon.
According to the latest reports a total of 3,700 people have been confirmed dead, with the number rising by the hour.
More than 7,000 people have been reported injured across the affected provinces in Turkey, with thousands of more people still believed to be buried under the wreckage as a result of the horrifying collapse of residential buildings and infrastructure. Ongoing rescue operations are taking place in a desperate bid to save lives.
As the situation on the ground continues to change, it is still too early to estimate the size of this catastrophe - what we do know is that it is a race against time to save lives.
Al-Fikr are on ground working with partners to reach those affected by this tragedy. We are working to provide emergency medical aid and all the essentials required to get through this devastating time.
Time is of the essence at this critical stage, we need your support to reach and save as many lives as possible.
Please donate generously to our Turkey Syria Earthquake Appeal.
