The Story

RESCHEDULED DATE - 1st FEBRUARY 2025 due to adverse weather conditions on 11th January. We are holding a fundraising event to raise money for The Freya Foundation, a charity that aims to raise awareness for the condition PDH, or pyruvate dehydrogenase deficiency complex. Rose, who attends Farm Friends in our Rising Threes room has recently been diagnosed with PDH – we would really appreciate you taking the time to read Rose’s story, which you can find attached. To learn more about the charity and PDH Deficiency you can visit: thefreyafoundation.co.uk As a setting, we really wanted to do something to support Rose and her family, so we have set ourselves the challenge of completing an 11.6 mile walk around Lake Vyrnwy! Many of the staff are taking part and we aim to raise as much awareness and money as possible to support The Freya Foundation with the amazing work they do. Everyone is welcome to take part in as much or as little as you would like, either virtually sharing our event and fundraising page or in person by joining us on our walk. Please do let us know if you would like to participate. The event will take place on Saturday 11th January 2025. We are aiming to set off at around 10am - further information will about this will be shared in the coming weeks. We are so grateful for your support!’ From everyone at Farm Friends Day Nursery. Rose's mum has shared the following: 'Our gorgeous Rose has recently been diagnosed with a type of Mitochondrial Disease called Pyruvate Dehydrogenase Complex Deficiency (PDCD or PDH Deficiency) This is a rare and progressive genetic condition currently without a cure, with only a few hundred cases diagnosed worldwide. Mitochondria produce most of the energy your body needs. If you have a mitochondrial disease, your cells aren't able to produce enough energy. Those with PDH Deficiency usually develop a combination of symptoms including a buildup of lactic acid (lactic acidosis), delayed development of mental abilities and motor skills, seizures, weak muscle tone, poor coordination, difficulty walking, brain structure abnormalities and have a reduced life expectancy. In Rose's case, we knew from a few months old that Rose wasn't meeting developmental milestones or gaining weight as she should have been and it's been a 3 year journey of tests and appointments to find a diagnosis. PDH Deficiency affects all areas of Rose's development and growth, but Rose doesn't let this affect her enjoyment of life and is a super happy little girl who absolutely loves making friends, singing as loud as she can and always making people laugh! The Freya Foundation are the UK's only charity dedicated solely to helping those affected by PDH Deficiency, by raising awareness, supporting families affected and working with Drs and medical specialists to find out more about the condition as well as funding research projects into PDH Deficiency. Thank you for your support'.
