West Midlands Maties | 2026: A Year of Impact As alumni of Stellenbosch University living across the West Midlands, we know what it means to walk under the oak trees on Victoria Street, to sit on the Rooiplein with friends, and to graduate with hope in our hearts and possibility ahead of us. But for too many final-year students today, that moment looks very different. They reach the final stretch of their degrees only to face outstanding tuition, accommodation and living costs through circumstances entirely beyond their control. When they cross the graduation stage, instead of holding a degree and transcript that open doors, all that waits is an invoice for fees due. In a country grappling with one of the highest youth unemployment rates in the world, the difference between graduating debt-cleared and graduating in debt is the difference between employment and exclusion. That is why 2026 is our Year of Impact. Through the GradMe initiative, we are raising funds for the UK–EU Bursary Fund. This fund supports talented final-year students who cannot afford to complete their studies, ensuring they graduate with degree and transcript in hand, ready to enter the profession they have worked so hard to qualify for. This is more than financial support. It is an investment in South Africa’s future. Every graduate who steps into employment becomes an active, engaged taxpayer. Some will become entrepreneurs, business owners, job creators. All will carry forward the values and excellence of Stellenbosch. The impact multiplies far beyond a single student. As a West Midlands chapter, we are answering the call. And alumni chapters across the Global North are doing the same. Together, we can create a wave of support that ensures no Matie falls at the final hurdle. We cannot do everything. But we can fund a final year. We can remove the last barrier.
