The Story

Maties in Ireland Care In 2026, the Ireland Chapter has chosen to turn connection into impact. Through #Move4Food at Stellenbosch University, we are committing to stand alongside students facing food insecurity. Our goal is clear and achievable: to raise €2,500, which will provide daily meals for four students across the academic teaching year. It costs just €5 to provide one meal on campus. In Ireland, €5 might be a coffee and a light bite. An everyday expense. In Stellenbosch, it can mean the difference between a student being fully present in a lecture or quietly distracted by hunger. Over 125 teaching days, €5 a day provides consistent nourishment for one student. Through this campaign, the Ireland Chapter hopes to support four students, ensuring they have a meal each day of the teaching year. That means: 125 days of nourishment. 125 days of dignity. 125 days of choosing learning over survival. Each year, more than 1,000 students seek assistance from the campus social worker because they cannot cover basic food costs. For some, the choice is stark: buy food or buy textbooks. Eat today or invest in tomorrow. As a global Matie community, we can help remove that choice. We invite you to contribute €5 to cover one meal, or more if you are able. Every contribution moves us closer to sustaining four students for the full teaching year. What feels small here has a tangible and lasting impact there. When Maties in Ireland gather, we celebrate our shared history and strengthen our global ties. In 2026, we will also stand together in purposeful solidarity with students who need us most. Together, we can ensure that four students are sustained, supported and able to do what they came to university to do: learn, grow and graduate.
