The Story
On 14 September 2025, Monique Moore-Barnes, a proud Matie, will swap her corporate boardroom for a bicycle saddle, taking on the London to Brighton Cycle Ride. Her mission? To raise £500 in support of financially disadvantaged students in South Africa studying at Stellenbosch University.
The UK-EU Bursary Fund plays a crucial role in helping students from households earning less than £30,000 per year complete their final year of study, graduate debt-free, and enter the workforce without the burden of student loans. In a country where youth unemployment is alarmingly high—hovering around 45%—this fund provides more than just financial relief; it offers a launchpad for future leaders, innovators, and changemakers.
Monique knows firsthand how life-changing this support can be. “I was in the situation myself, where I did not have the finances to complete my studies. Were it not for bursaries such as these supporting talented students to achieve their academic goals, I wouldn’t be where I am today,” she shares. And where is she today? Holding an MSc and an MBA, and serving as a director in a global top 10 pharmaceutical company. Not too shabby for someone who once worried about affording textbooks!
This isn’t the first time a Matie has taken on the London to Brighton challenge for a great cause. Over the years, alumni have cycled their way to raising thousands of pounds, ensuring that promising students aren’t forced to put their dreams on hold due to financial constraints. Each pedal stroke has meant another step towards success for a student who just needed that final push to cross the graduation stage.
Monique, however, brings her own unique flair to the ride. “I am really passionate about ensuring we empower and enable today’s youth to succeed and be the leaders of the future,” she says.
The London to Brighton Cycle Ride is no leisurely Sunday pedal— but Monique is determined. “The climb may be tough, but not nearly as tough as what many students go through just to get an education,” she says. “If they can push through, so can I!”
Support Monique as she takes on this challenge by donating to her fundraising campaign. Every pound raised is an investment in the future of South Africa’s youth, ensuring they graduate not only with degrees but with the confidence and financial freedom to thrive.
Let’s help her turn this ride into a ride of a lifetime—not just for her, but for the students whose futures depend on it!
