The Story
Given the increasing spread of synthetic opioids contaminating multiple drug supplies across the UK, and the government’s hesitancy to provide the infrastructure and resources to protect people's health and wellbeing, we believe that there’s a need for a space to build our community knowledge and capacity to keep each other safer.
Not only are we fighting an uphill battle with the current government on evidence-based drug policy, in the midst of a broader drug death crisis which has worsened year on year for more than a decade - we are also seeing some of the most dire circumstances for people in our communities. Immigrants, trans people, racialised people, sex workers are having to fight harder to survive. Some of these struggles are against direct threats of violence against the Far Right, and many others are directed towards resisting systems of control or making do while up against extreme state neglect.
Harm Reduction is as much about new needles and naloxone as it is about decriminalisation, about acceptable housing options for all, and about enabling conditions where daily life for all people can be about thriving rather than surviving. The Hub was founded on these beliefs, and aims to work towards this vision by meeting needs while supporting self-determination for different oppressed groups and fostering solidarity between them.
Release Legal Emergency & Drugs Service
The Harm Reduction Hub is a community drop-in centre which provides low threshold harm reduction advice and signposting for any visitor, with the goal of benefitting people who are traditionally underserved due to stigma - such as people who rough sleep, use drugs, or sex work. We offer low barrier naloxone distribution, drug testing supplies, and a needle and syringe programme.
In order to keep our programme alive, we rely on small donations. For just £5, we can buy 30 needles and syringes, 900 alcohol swabs, or 25 condoms - that is a lot of harm reduced!
*When and where is this Hub?*
The Hub is currently co-located with The People's Letters, at 395 Cambridge Heath Road, London E2 9RA. Visitors are always welcome.
For now, the Hub is running from Monday to Thursday, 14:00 to 16:00, and Saturday 16:00 to 19:00. Every other Wednesday we offer a late night shift from 19:00 to 22:00 - during this time, the bookshop is closed, so if you are looking for a more private harm reduction visit, this is the best time to come. Check out our current Instagram account @harmreduxhub to confirm which Wednesdays are running each month.
