What drives someone to take on a backyard ultra? For Paul, it’s not just a test of endurance. It’s a way to make a difference. Paul is taking on the Gosfield Backyard Ultra to raise funds for Oncogene Cancer Research after being deeply moved by the story of Amy, who was diagnosed with ALK-positive lung cancer at just 20 years old. But this cause has become even more personal. Paul’s close friend Tyson was diagnosed with EGFR-positive lung cancer last year. Two people he cares about. Two different oncogenic drivers. One devastating disease. Their stories have given Paul even more reason to take on a challenge that will push him further than ever before. Amy and Tyson are among the growing number of people whose lung cancer is driven by a specific genetic change, or oncogene. These cancers can affect people of any age, including people who have never smoked, and require research specifically focused on understanding these molecular drivers and developing better treatments. That’s where Oncogene Cancer Research comes in. We are a UK patient-led charity dedicated to accelerating research into oncogene-driven lung cancers. 100% of donations raised through this challenge will go directly towards research, helping to fund work that could lead to better treatments and, ultimately, more time for people like Amy, Tyson and the many others affected. And the challenge Paul is taking on is extraordinary. The Gosfield Backyard Ultra is unlike any ordinary race. Every hour, on the hour, Paul must complete a 4.167-mile loop. Miss the start of the next lap and his race is over. There is no finish line. The challenge continues until only one runner remains. Paul hopes to run further than he ever has before, pushing himself beyond his previous limits to turn his endurance into something that can make a difference. Running wasn't always part of Paul's life. He first laced up his trainers to improve his health, but quickly discovered a passion for endurance challenges. Since then, he's completed five 50K ultramarathons, a 50-mile run to celebrate his 50th birthday, and an incredible 80 miles in 24 hours. Paul knows that no matter how tough this challenge becomes, it cannot compare to the challenges faced every day by people living with lung cancer. Every lap is for Amy and Tyson.
