The Story
We want to celebrate the life of our son, Sebastian Rowley Matthews. Sebastian was born at 02:20 on 13th April 2017 at Saint Mary’s Hospital, Manchester. He was very premature at just over 21 weeks, weighing one pound and one ounce. We spent an amazing hour and five minutes with him before he passed away peacefully at 03:25. After such heart-breaking and devastating events, the Rainbow Room and midwives at Saint Mary’s Hospital, Manchester, gave us the opportunity to spend a few days with our son, grieving together in a non-clinical room.
The Rainbow Room at Saint Mary’s Hospital, Manchester, is a room set up for parents and families to go to after the delivery of a baby who is stillborn or died during labour or in the hours afterwards. The room allows parents and relatives to spend precious time with their child. A comfortable, personal and warm space, the Rainbow Room takes away the clinical aspects that come with a hospital environment. The room has a cooling cot which is specially designed to keep a baby’s body cool after they have passed away. This allows bereaved families to spend a little longer with their child, enabling them to create lasting memories and provide more time to make important decisions. The bereavement midwives give families the support they require, taking photographs as well as hand and foot prints, helping to create precious memories.
