The Story

During the COVID pandemic the Paediatric Cardiology services have enormously suffered in terms of initial cancellation of all the ambulatory ECG services provided. This has created a huge back log and we are now starting to relive the situation again with the second peak which will certainly have a further knock down effect on the services. AliceCore Kardia mobile devices can record multiple ECG strips from the touch of the finger of the child and can be emailed or passed to cardiology services immediately for analysis. This will help diagnose and manage children with common arrhythmias or those at risk of arrhythmogenic sudden cardiac death. To highlight, this will help and facilitate the diagnosis of arrhythmia in our children population and help arriving to diagnosis in those with delayed access to service and those with infrequent symptoms whose symptoms were not picked on 3 week event monitor. The Wales health board serves about 600,000 people in the South East of Wales among which 104,000 children of 0-16 years which is 1/5 of the paediatric population of whole of Wales.

Background It is common for children to experience symptoms of unpleasant beating of the heart (palpitations). In most cases, these symptoms are part of the normal spectrum and there is nothing to worry about. In some cases the palpitations may be due to an abnormal heart rhythm. In order for doctors to decide what is normal and what is abnormal, it is very helpful to record the heart rhythm at the time the symptoms are occurring. If symptoms occur infrequently, it can be hard to “capture” them. A device is available called the AliveCor Kardia that links to an app on smartphones and this allows an ECG trace to be recorded when the device is activated. The Leon Heart Fund Charity has provided the Children’s Heart Unit with a small number of AliveCor Kardia devices. We are able to loan these devices for up to a 3 month period – this may help us to capture heart rhythm problems in children with infrequent symptoms.
