The Story

In July 2025 a group of sixth-form students from Netherthorpe School are volunteering to work with a worldwide wildlife conservation charity called Operation Wallacea - opwall.com/expeditions/school-expedition/mexico They will be traveling to a remote part of Mexico, Calakmul Bioreserve, on the Yucatan Peninsula, to study the Meso-American Rainforest for one week, followed by a week-long study of marine populations and diversity, including reef ecology and turtle conservation. This will be completed at the coastal site of, Akumal. The students will receive specialist training in order for them to complete a range of different surveys such as large mammal transect surveys in the jungle to collecting data for the marine conservation programme. This experience is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity, which inevitably comes with a high cost to each student. We are asking for donations towards this trip to help fund the project and support students’ experience and contribute to the global conservation project. The aim of this experience is to provide Netherthorpe students with skills to take them through their life’s journey but also raise their and others’ awareness of the importance of looking after our fragile global ecosystem. What we care for today, will live for tomorrow! Money can be donated as part of the various fundraising initiatives we offer, or if you would like to just contribute towards the trip independently, all proceeds are kindly appreciated. Thank you for reading and I hope you can contribute towards this unique and rewarding project.
