Help Bring Reshma Home and Support Her Young Family A young mother’s life ended unexpectedly, leaving behind a heartbroken husband, a two-and-a-half-year-old daughter and a family struggling to cope with an unimaginable loss. Reshma Rajan, aged just 32, from Wayanad, Kerala, came to the UK with dreams of building a better future for her family. A bright and hardworking young woman, Reshma had completed her engineering studies in Kerala and later came to the UK to pursue a postgraduate degree in Engineering at the University of Chester. After completing her studies, Reshma and her husband, Sreerag, began building their life in the UK. Their little daughter, only two and a half years old, was born during this journey. Like any young family, they had hopes, dreams and plans for their future. Sadly, everything changed in the most devastating way. Reshma was admitted to Liverpool Royal University Hospital for what was expected to be a routine procedure to remove gallstones. She had been living a normal life without any major health concerns. Tragically, following the surgery, her condition deteriorated, and she passed away unexpectedly. What should have been a routine hospital admission ended with her family facing the unbearable reality of bringing their beloved wife, daughter and sister home in a coffin. Reshma’s sudden death has left her husband, Sreerag, completely shattered. He is now trying to cope with the loss of his beloved wife while caring for their little daughter and facing an uncertain future without her. The family is also facing severe financial hardship. Reshma came from a very poor family in Wayanad. Her father survives through daily-wage work, while her mother has no regular employment. Her younger brother also depends on occasional small jobs for his livelihood. The family owns only a small 15-cent plot of land and has no significant assets or financial security. Sreerag’s family is also from a financially disadvantaged background. His father earns a living through daily-wage work and taxi driving. To come to the UK for their studies and to establish their life here, the family had borrowed more than £20,000 (over £20 lakh), and a significant portion of this loan is still outstanding. The family is now facing the additional financial burden of repatriating Reshma’s body and dealing with the many unexpected expenses that have followed this heartbreaking tragedy. Behind all these numbers is a little girl who has suddenly lost her mother. Mizhi, only two and a half years old, will grow up with memories of a mother who was taken away far too soon. No child should have to experience such a loss, and no husband should have to face such grief while worrying about how he will provide for his young child. At this incredibly difficult time, we are appealing to the generous hearts of the Malayali community and well-wishers to stand beside this young family.
