The Story
‘Chat Club’ links ‘mentor friends’ in the UK with disadvantaged students in schools and orphanages overseas such as Children's Garden Home (CGH). From our chats we know how much these children benefit by connecting to their mentors. We help build their confidence, belief in themselves and improve their English skills.
This is what Paul (19) one of CGH’s students has to say:
“I am forever grateful for the support that Moses and Sylvia and other generous sponsors have given me since I joined CGH. My wish for other children joining our home is that they have the same opportunity.
This year there has been a big increase in the number of children coming to the home, but we lack resources. We need basics including food and personal items such as soap, toothpaste and shoes. We also need salaries for our wonderful teachers. We do all we can to provide for ourselves, by growing healthy vegetables, raising chickens and running a sewing business. Thank you very much for the support and shaping me into who I am today.”
How you can help – a small amount of money goes a long way in Kenya. For example, a meal for a child costs just 50p. A stationery kit for a child for a year is £13.30 and toiletries for a girl for a month is £6.35 or £5 for a boy.

FROM ACORNS TO MIGHTY OAKS
Children's Garden Home (CGH) Kenya was founded in 2001 by Moses Ndung’u, an inspirational man who, whilst living in the slums, attended a school that changed his life. Moses decided to help others in the same way that he had been helped. Moses and his wife Sylvia opened an orphanage and school in Uthiru Nairobi, called ‘Children’s Garden Home.’
Our current focus is raising funds to build a new hygiene block consisting of toilets and showers.
CGH now accommodates 195 children in a happy, nurturing and safe home under the care of Moses and Sylvia. The school within CGH educates 500 students from primary age up to college/university or employment.
The students at CGH have escaped abuse, exploitation as child labour or extremely dysfunctional broken homes. Many are from single parent families where problems are made worse by drink/drugs or poverty. Education was never a priority for these families.
With help and care from Moses and his team, as well as local and overseas supporters, the children grow into happy, confident, capable young adults able to live independent lives, provide for themselves and give back to their community.
"I read about your work in Platinum magazine. It is such amazing work but not the type that hits the headlines so I hope this small donation will help."
