The Lorna Barker Scholarship Programme

Lorna was a much loved member of the Baraka family and we were all devastated at the news that she had lost her battle against cancer. Lorna spent many years working or volunteering for Baraka and, even though she left for pastures new in Uganda, she remained on the Baraka Zambia Board as a director. We will all miss her, although her memory and legacy live on regardless. Countless children and young people are in a better situation due to her support, mentorship, guidance and kindness. We thought it appropriate that Lorna continues to help the next generation of Zambian children. Therefore, with her family's approval, Baraka has set up "The Lorna Barker Scholarship Programme". This programme will allow at least one student from a poor background to go to university every 3 years, an otherwise unattainable dream for so many young people in Zambia. We are looking to initially raise £5,000 to launch the programme. However, the average student undertakes a 3 year course at about £2,500 to £3,000 per annum so we will need your ongoing fundraising support to keep the programme going. Knowing how much happiness Lorna found in working with her students, we like to think that this programme is something she would have deeply appreciated and wholeheartedly approved of.
