The Story
Shop and Donate is a social supermarket existing to tackle the
hunger crisis in the UK. It’s for people in deprived areas who are experiencing food poverty.
4.7 million of adults in the UK are suffering food insecurity (9% of households).
2.5 million adults are suffering food insecurity due to lack of money to buy food.
UK churns out 15 million tonnes of food waste a year while 8.4 million people.
struggle to afford food = entire population in London.
1/3 of food produced in the world goes to waste.
240,000 tonnes of food is wasted by UK supermarkets every year.
During the pandemic, we offered our local community a Telephone Befriending project. Data gathered, 85% of our residents wanted a community kitchen, 87% cookery courses, and 91% community garden. We need funding to set up our social enterprise to meet that demand. This involves setting up a social supermarket, community kitchen and restaurant, and community garden. In light of this, we have assessed our need as £5,000 for the community kitchen, £3,000 for the community garden, £2,000 for the community restaurant, £40,000 for the social supermarket, £10,000 for a van to deliver food, and £5,000 for online healthy eating course lessons via zoom, including ingredients, chef costs, shipping boxes, etc.
