Digital Career Education Library: Inspiring young people studying at home during the Covid-19 crisis

opportunity-location 1-15 Clere St, Shoreditch, London EC2A 4LJ, UK
opportunity-dates 15 Apr - 15 Jul 2020
During these uncertain times, with school and business closures and more time spent at home, we believe it is more important than ever to raise the aspirations of young people, giving them the opportunity to explore options for their future careers. As such, Founders4Schools is moving quickly to develop resources that will support students learn about and develop the skills needed for a successful career in the modern world of work. With funding, Founders4Schools will develop a Digital Library of short talks from business leaders and professionals from a variety of sectors. These short videos will be a flexible resource for educators and parents and embedded into remote lesson plans or home schooling. Volunteers will speak about their career journey, their sector and the skills they’ve needed for success in the workplace. The videos will be categorised by industry type on the Founders4Schools Youtube channel so that educators and parents can find the right video for their student quickly and easily. Founders4Schools will particularly, but not exclusively, engage professionals that have been furloughed due to the Covid-19 crisis. These professionals may have more time for the creation of a video as they won’t be participating in their normal day job and will also benefit from the opportunity to give back to the students in their community. We have already had interest from over 30 business leaders eager to provide a video, however, we require funding for engaging more volunteers, editing the videos, quality checking, categorising the videos on our Youtube channel and promoting the videos to students, educators and parents across England and Scotland. The project will have a multifaceted impact on students, educators and volunteers: Impact on students: short videos will ensure young people are informed about the skills they need to succeed in the modern job market and will foster social mobility of disadvantaged students. Importantly, activities will also help overcome the challenge of self-isolation brought about by the current global health threat and enable students to witness first-hand the successes they could achieve in the world of work, providing hope and encouragement to young people for the months ahead. Impact on Educators: our student-employer webinars will give teachers vital support when planning remote learning for their students and will enable them to provide high quality careers provision despite being out of the classroom. Our digital platform will enable them to book a Webinar quickly and easily so they are empowered and not burdened by this initiative. Impact on Volunteers: employees will benefit through feeling a greater sense of purpose having given their time, experience and insight to students and provided resources which can be used by students across the country for months to come. Volunteering in this way will also help prevent the negative consequences to emotional well-being which may occur as a result of the crisis.
