UNHCR delivers life-saving assistance like shelter, food and water, help safeguard fundamental human rights, and develop solutions that ensure people have a safe place to call home where they can build a better future. About This Cause We are now witnessing the highest levels of displacement on record. According to data released in June 2022, UNHCR estimates that more than 100 million people have now been forced to flee their homes globally. This tragic milestone is a stark reminder that, every day, women, men and children are being forced to abandon their homes and flee to safety at a moment’s notice.  Alongside refugees and asylum seekers are also millions of stateless people who have been denied a nationality and access to basic rights such as education, healthcare, employment and freedom of movement. In a world where nearly 1 person is forcibly displaced every two seconds as a result of conflict or persecution, our work at UNHCR is more important than ever before. We strive to ensure that everyone has the right to seek asylum and find safe refuge in another State, with the option to eventually return home, integrate or resettle. During times of displacement, we provide critical emergency assistance in the form of clean water, sanitation and healthcare, as well as shelter, blankets, household goods and sometimes food. We also arrange transport and assistance packages for people who return home, and income-generating projects for those who resettle.
