We are looking for a grant towards the cost of installing Wi-Fi into four of our almshouses with each resident having their own Wi-Fi router. Our almshouse residents range in age from 60 to 94 and all came to us as a result of financial hardship. Throughout the lockdown and the Covid crisis the 35 residents in the four residential properties were in isolation from their families and friends resulting in social isolation and some mental health issues. They were unable to partake in communal activities. The lockdown has shown how important IT is, for shopping, banking, prescriptions etc,. There is a massive impact for communications to the residents’ family and friends, church services, social activities. We will support the residents in setting up email addresses as well as offering them training in using IT and such things as Facebook and online health and fitness classes. We are hoping to be able to run a Voice Over Internet phone system once the Wifi is installed. This will give the residents the equivalent of zoom communication with their family and friends as well as each other. They will also be able to phone within this country for free.
